Construction Accountant

Aterra Construction Services, located in West Des Moines, Iowa, is a developer of Commercial Real Estate Investments and has a newly created role for a Construction Accountant. Construction Accountant Job Responsibilities:

This is a new role created to provide support to the Controller and Construction Services by processing Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, and creating Financials. This position will also provide General Ledger support for Aterra Real Estate and will assist in preparing those Financials. To be successful in this role, you must be able to help shape this new role and take the lead in setting up the accounting software with assistance from the Controller and the software support team. This person must also have a sense of urgency, be able to meet deadlines, be a highly organized self-starter, and a team player.

Accountant Job Duties:

  • Set up accounting software to be used efficiently for Construction jobs
  • Work closely with the Construction Manager and Controller to create processes
  • Provides accounting for all phases of Project Management including contracts, insurance requirements, invoicing, change orders, pay applications, collections, and sub-contractor’s invoices and change orders
  • Generates monthly Job Cost to Date reports and works with PMs to reconcile with Project Manager’s budgets for each project
  • Work with Project Managers to prepare and post all monthly invoices for vendors and billings to customers
  • Verifies that subcontractors and vendors meet all requirements of contract agreement prior to any payments, including but not limited to waivers, closeout documents, and insurance requirements.
  • Maintain accounting files and records on each project including researching discrepancies and determining adjustments needed for bank reconciliations
  • Continually interfaces with Project Managers and Superintendents to ensure project charges & invoice codes are up to date and accurate. Must ensure that Job Costing and General Ledger are accurate and up to date at all times
  • Prepare monthly sales & use taxes for submission
  • Prepare general ledger entries and reconcile balance sheet accounts
  • Assist with preparation of annual budgets
  • Manage cash position of companies and monitor bank account activity
  • Provide support for acquisitions and dispositions
  • Efficiently manage multiple deadlines
  • Complete credit applications as requested by vendors to establish credit
  • Prepare necessary documents to aid Controller in monthly financial process
  • Annual processing of 1099’s
  • Experience in Excel and other Microsoft products
  • Protect the value of the organization by keeping information confidential
  • Other duties as required by management

Accountant Skills and Qualifications:

  • Two-year degree in Accounting or four years of professional experience
  • Four years or more of Construction Accounting experience required
  • Accounting, AP, and AR
  • Experience with Construction software required, experience in Yardi Breeze or Voyager a plus
  • Deadline-Oriented, Time Management, Attention to Detail, Confidentiality, PC Proficiency, and Excellent Math Skills

Physical Demands:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times
  • Able to travel as needed – no overnight travel

Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full-time salaried position – Monday through Friday 8:00am – 5:00pm, some flexibility on times
