Role Overview

This position will serve as an Archaeology Unit Intern for the Cultural Resources Office within the Environmental Services Division of the Indiana Department of Transportation. The Intern will be responsible for a variety of division projects and support. The objective of the position is to provide a valuable learning experience for the intern and assist the agency in completing their assignments and responsibilities. The Intern will report to the Archaeology Unit Team Lead. The working location will be split between the INDOT Central Office and the INDOT Archaeology Laboratory. 

 

Hourly Rate:

The hourly wage for this position traditionally starts at $16.24 per hour for current undergraduate students and $17.24 per hour for those with an earned bachelor’s degree.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Completion of a research project (to be assigned) and reporting of results;
  • Assist with archaeological fieldwork;
  • Assist with preparation of archaeology reports and related documents as needed;
  • Participation in cross-training opportunities within Environmental Services Division, as applicable;
  • Other duties as assigned

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Working towards a Graduate or bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related field
  • Completion of at least one archeological field school preferred
  • Basic knowledge of the mission and role of INDOT
  • Basic understanding of state policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Knowledge of state government structure, administrative procedures, and the legislative process
  • Ability to research, draft, and edit data and reports 
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects
  • Ability to operate computer tools
  • Good research and writing skills
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills suitable for a wide variety of contacts
  • Confidence and ability to learn on the job and adapt quickly to changing circumstances 

 

Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
