Job Summary

This position will require the committment of 2 terms (spring and summer), running from January 12th through August 7, 2026. 

 

The purpose of this position is to attract future engineers by providing an entry point to promote careers in railway engineering - bridge construction. Candidates accepted for this position will have the opportunities to apply their engineering management skills in the field and to gain firsthand work experience in the various aspects of railway engineering and major construction. This position may include opportunities for the candidates to work during the school semester as a part of an intern program.

 

Amtrak operates and maintains an infrastructure system that is used for passenger rail services connecting a national network of stations. It is the ongoing focus for Amtrak to not only maintain this infrastructure system but facilitate both improvements to and full replacements of aged out structures, specifically railway bridges. Amtrak is looking for an individual to fill an intern position that will be engaged in all facilitating levels of a bridge replacement project currently underway.

Essential Functions

• Gain general knowledge about railroad construction management and rail bridge replacement.
• Assist in providing administrative support to ensure the successful completion of assigned project tasks within scope, schedule, and budget.
• Assist in conducting field audits, with a focus on improving accuracy and project data analysis.
• Contribute to the development of audit reports and introduce innovative ideas, incorporating modern technology platforms for efficient information capture and analysis.
• Receive instruction on the various Engineering and Railroad safety standards, work procedures, and operating practices.

Minimum Qualifications

• Must be actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution.
• Must be actively pursuing a degree in Engineering, Computer Science and/or Safety.
• Must have at least 1 year of academic undergraduate studies completed or a sophomore status at minimum.
• Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher. 
• Must be available to work across both the spring and summer terms, from January 12th through August 7, 2026 in-person.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in a transportation, engineering, manufacturing, industrial, or safety.
• Experience working in diverse environment.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
• Experienced in Blueprint/Plan reading.

Communications and Interpersonal Skills

Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.

PAY TRANSPARENCY:

The hourly range is $17.50 per hour - $35.00 per hour. Pay is based on factors including school year, program of study, etc. In addition, paid internships include Amtrak rail pass privileges as a part of the experience along with one (1) PTO day per academic year.
