Summary

These positions are located in the following cities (click on the links for more information regarding the surrounding area):

  • Canon City, CO
  • Dolores, CO
  • Montrose, CO

We expect to fill 4 vacancies at this time; however, additional positions may be filled from this announcement if they become available.

This is a temporary appointment. Appointment to this position will not convey permanent status and will be for a period not-to-exceed 1039 hours in a service year.

Duties

Help

  • For GS-5 - Participates in inventories of wildlife and their habitats. Gathers samples; assists in analyzing samples. Collects data on wildlife.
  • Compiles and organizes survey data in current files or other resources, prepares narratives and reports on and overlays of areas inventories.
  • Participates in habitat improvement projects (planting shrubs, trees and grasses; prescribed burns, and weed control) and construction projects (water developments and fencing).
  • For GS-7 - Inventories wildlife and their habitat. Performs on the ground surveys of wildlife habitat. Plans, aids in designing, and lays out projects for wildlife habitat improvement.
  • Analyzes data; prepares reports with findings. Prepares preliminary analysis of impacts on wildlife for inclusion in environmental documents.
  • Determines wildlife factors such as occupancy and fate of reproductive efforts, feed habits, mortality, success of growth, and adult and young behavior.
  • Conducts compliance checks on minerals exploration, development and operations, realty actions, and range improvement projects to evaluate impacts and assure conformation w/mitigation measures.
  • Reviews forestry, watershed, and range improvement project proposals for compatibility with wildlife needs.
  • All grades - Enters/retrieves data from automated databases. Uses motor vehicles, which include 4-wheel drive or ATV.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications for the 0404 Biological Science Technician Series at the GS-05:

You must possess one full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity that included performing the following duties: (1) Record data relating to wildlife studies; (2) inventory water, winter ranges, and/or upland game bird habitat; (3) participate in banding, tagging and releasing a variety of wildlife; (4) perform vegetative work in wildlife habitat areas (planting bulbs, brush and seeds); (5) enter and retrieve data from automated databases.

OR

You must possessa bachelor's degree or 4 years of successfully completed education above high school (120 semester hours) with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must be directly related to wildlife biology studies. The education must be obtained in an accredited college or university. Official transcripts must be provided to support this.

OR

You must possess an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education (in excess of the first 60 semester hours). The combined total must equal 100%. Official transcripts must be provided to support this.

Minimum Qualifications for the 0404 Biological Science Technician Series at the GS-07:

You must possess one full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: (1) Research, compile, and tabulate a full range of wildlife inventory data; (2) lead lower graded technicians in the collection of field data; (3) interpret aerial photos, landsat imagery, and topographic maps to determine land use/vegetation distribution; (4) process field samples and/or specimens; (5) enter and retrieve data from automated databases.

OR

You must have completed one full year of graduate level education (18 semester hours) that is directly related to the position. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. The education must be obtained in an accredited college or university. Official transcripts must be provided to support this.

OR

You must possess an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must be directly related to the work of the position. Official transcripts must be provided to support this.

Experience

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: Work requires some physical exertion such as bending and walking in terrain that is rough, rocky, mountainous and densely vegetated. Required to lift and carry equipment necessary to efficiently perform the work of the position, and to provide for personal comfort and safety. This can include tools, personal protective equipment, food and water for extended periods of work away from vehicles.

Work Environment: Office work is performed in an adequately lighted, ventilated, cooled and heated area. During fieldwork is subject to cuts and bruises, extreme and adverse weather conditions, and injuries and discomforts from pests and animals. Employee will adhere to all safety rules.

Applicants may qualify for these positions based on experience, education, or an equivalent combination as described in the Qualifications section of this announcement.

Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-05 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-07.
