Job Description

Goodwyn Mills Cawood (GMC) is one of the largest privately held architecture and engineering firms in the Southeast, with offices located throughout Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee.

GMC has an opening for an Entry Level Coastal Engineer to support on-going projects throughout the southeast in our Mobile, AL office. Applicants should have passed the FE exam or be able to pass within 1 year of employment. This is an exciting opportunity for a self-motivated engineer to work in a growing office. We are looking for someone who has excellent time management skills and is eager to develop a broad knowledge of coastal engineering practice issues. In this position, you will gain exposure to projects ranging from nature-based solutions to coastal infrastructure resilience. Examples include beach nourishment, tidal marsh creation, tidal inlet management, waterfront development, coastal hazard assessments, coastal resilience planning, and more.

Responsibilities

  • Collect, analyze, model, and synthesize data to inform aspects of coastal engineering design
  • Develop and apply coastal numerical models to aid in planning, design, and permitting
  • Organize, analyze, and visualize data using GIS software
  • Assist in the preparation of plans, specifications, calculations, designs, and cost estimates for coastal projects
  • Prepare and disseminate correspondence and reports for projects, clients, and team members
  • Collaborate effectively with other team members, project partners, regulatory staff, and/or clients
  • Assist with fieldwork including data collection, site visits, site inspections, surveys, etc.
  • Prepare and present technical content during meetings with team members, clients, and/or the public
  • Assist other team members in the execution of project work

Minimum Qualifications

  • Related experience: 0-5 years
  • Future Engineering Licensure is an objective
  • BS* degree in Civil/Coastal Engineering from an ABET Program (*MS preferred)
  • Registration as EIT or ability to obtain within 1 year of employment
  • Self-motivated person looking for career development and advancement
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Capable of working in a fast-paced, multi-disciplined environment
  • Knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Proficiency in GIS and basic coastal numerical models

Travel Requirements

  • FIELD (10%) AND OFFICE (90%)
  • This position requires work to be performed in an office environment and in the field. Work done in the field may consist of exposure to various types of weather and temperatures. Engineers may also be exposed to pollutants, chemicals, insects, and possibly water-borne pathogens. Employees are required to wear appropriate protective clothing and gear when performing fieldwork.
